Every country must have a government. The primary duties of a government are to protect the life and prosperity of the citizens, to maintain law and order, to maintain the roads and highways, and to defend the country from foreign foes. Besides all this, governments make arrangements for education, provide a hospital for the sick and attend to sanitation.

An army and navy have to keep up, the police force has to be paid, schools and colleges have to be provided and teachers supported, expert health officers and sanitary engineers employed. To fulfill all of these great public duties the government needs money.

Now, the question is where all the money needed for these public services to come from? All of this money comes from the public in the shape of tax. Therefore, it is necessary to contribute the money needed, for the money they give in rates and taxes comes back to them in the shape of these benefits which all enjoy.

So long as our money is being used in the right way, and the burden of taxation is distributed fairly, we have no right to grumble at having to pay out a share of the taxes.
